Trust chains and Trusted Issuers

Build your own chain of trust on EBSI's Issuers Registry: Register your issuers, define layers of accreditation to issue, manage and check digital credentials that prove a qualification. The issuers are themselves accredited, so credentials are tied to a recognised source, revocable in real time, and instantly verifiable by any relying party without contacting the issuer. EBSI does this with two on-chain registries, both queried at verification time:

  • The Issuers Registry records which legal entities are accredited, and for which type of claim. Accreditation is itself delegated through a chain: a Root Trusted Accreditation Organisation (RTAO) accredits Trusted Accreditation Organisations (TAOs), which in turn accredit Trusted Issuers (TIs), so no single party has to vouch for every issuer directly, and accreditation can be revoked at any level in real time.
  • The Schemas Registry records the data structure (JSON schema) each credential type must follow, so a verifier can also confirm the credential's shape matches what it claims to be.

This check happens directly against the ledger, so it doesn't require a bilateral integration between the relying party and the issuer. New to VCs and trust chains? Start with Verifiable Credentials & Trust Chains.
